I use a single British National brood box with a queen excluder.
My set up is similar to Peter's. Sometimes I use 2 brood boxes temporarily
when making an artificial swarm or a comb change. Normal wintering is in a
single national brood box on their own stores. The ampunt of surplus honey
they gather depends entirely on the season: the last couple of years have been
very poor, the previous year several hives were 6 full supers high.
I wouldn't claim that my bees are Amm; they are local mongrels that from
external appearance seem to have a good measure of Amm, but there is nearly
always a proportion of yellower bees mixed in.
