Jonah - I agree that in presenting this to visitors we need a positive
focus. Consume less definitely has a positive effect on one's wallet as
well as the planet.
In terms of talking about reducing consumption, maybe projects about
fixing (or repurposing) what's broken rather than replacing it might be
tackled in a how can we re-engineer this broken (whatever)?
Check out Penn and Teller's bottled vs. tap taste test (warning -
explicit language) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfPAjUvvnIc
The only caveat is that while the water at its municipal source
(reservoir, etc.) may be in good shape, think about the aging pipe
delivery systems. Baltimore has a big problem with this, though its tap
water is rated (and tastes to me) excellent, I think. I'm thinking a
filter on the tap is the best combination (though I drink straight from
the tap).
Eric: I think Ed Begley, Jr. did something along those lines on his
recent TV series "living with Ed" (on HGTV) - I think he made toast by
bicycle power. There's also
http://www.los-gatos.ca.us/davidbu/pedgen.html, in which the author
powers his computer monitor among other things. But what happened to
just riding your bike for entertainment (it's ad-free!)?
