A very general 'how to' on defanging web objects for use in locked down kiosks:
1) set up a local server on the host computer. xampp is a good choice.
2) Use PHP to pull in the RSS and parse it. This let's you construct a "mirrored"
page with no off-site links.
Who knows about the intellectual property issues when
you start messing with other people's content?
One nice source of interesting compelling non political news are the RSS feeds from the US Geological Survey.
I had built up an earthquake monitor that worked pretty well and recalculated all the UCT times to EST local times etc. Shortly afterward I discovered www.iris.edu ... Their big map image is a pretty good
start at a real nice earthquake exhibit.
Have fun, take back the web
