Hi Mike,
We use Scalar video probe microscopes. They have several types and
they are available from School Technology Resources, a company in our
area (Northern California). We have the VL-7 models, which are
sturdier than the "Scope-on-a-Rope" models. We also have a "Dial-A-
Scope" which is nice, but not quite as easy to use as the VL-7s.
They can be hooked up to any TV set. We have two large flat -panel
TV's on the wall and a small (15") "personal" TV if you don't want to
show your scab to the whole museum. Visitors get a brief
introduction on how to use them and then they are free to explore.
We provide an array of different materials to look at: feathers,
bones, fabric, hairs and fibers, rocks and minerals, etc. but
visitors seem to be most interested in looking at their own hair,
skin, tongues (we provide Saran Wrap), and other body parts.
I would still recommend facilitation as much as possible. We have
had some problems with "rough" use of the probes.
Hope that helps,
Anna
