It was only a matter of time. I just received an E-mail from BMG Music
Service. They are going out of business as of June 30. My "savings can
continue with our other service, yourmusic.com, where shipping is always
free and there are no automatic shipments."
I've been a member of BMG since the mid-80s. I joined them twice, both
times to take advantage of membership incentives that were too good to
resist. But you can give away stuff only so long; when they gave up on
their automatic selection model, people found it too easy to get their
CDs from Tower...and then not get CDs at all.
I haven't bought a CD from BMG in at least five years. Their selection,
geared to the broader market and not the niche collector, has long ceased
to have any interest for me. And yet I can't help feeling wistful at
its demise, as yet another once-source of my collection bites the dust.
