I think that Stokowski put it best in his final interview, with Dan
Rather. Stokowski says, "Emotion, life, or lifeless." When I listen to
Karajan I am impressed with the near perfection but ultimately there is
an emotional distance between him and the music. Stokowski, Furtwangler,
Munch, Kubelik, Giulini, Monteux, Barbirolli, Beecham, Walter, Argerich,
Milstein, Firkusny, Kovacevich, Cortot, Casals are several of the musicians
I return to often because when I lsten to their music making I hear
emotion, life, personality.
