Dear David and others,
In light of this conversation, I thought you would be interested in a book
that's part of a series published by the Exploratorium in San Francisco about
exhibit and exhibition development in science museums/centers: "Are We
There Yet? Conversations About Best Practices in Science Exhibition
Development," edited by Kathleen McLean and Catherine McEver. The book
includes detailed descriptions and analyses -- and a DVD of actual
walkthroughs -- of "Twelve Noteworthy Science Exhibitions" (among many
other helpful resources). Although they don't explicitly call these
examples "cool," they definitely fit the descriptions that you're all talking
about.
You can find more information about this book at:
http://www.lcoastpress.com/book.php?id=125
The other two books in the Exploratorium Museum Professional series
are "Finding Significance," by Sue Allen, and "Fostering Active Prolonged
Engagement," by Thomas Humphrey, Joshua P. Gutwill, and the Exploratorium
APE Team. (Visit www.LCoastPress.com for more information.)
Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!
Best,
Stefania R. Van Dyke
