Absolutely. Just listen to the 1944 BBC SO ELgar 2.
I also think the article actually diminishes Elgar: it seems to be saying
that his music can't stand that much interpretive weight.
Yet Hans Richter described Elgar 1 as 'the greatest symphony of modern
times, and not just by an Englishman'.
