I'm sure Peter will speak for himself, but the first thing that popped into my head was, "Why start at 1859? Why not start with ancient Egypt when hives were moved up and down the Nile?" And if you want to stick to the continental US, post 1859, the first example I can think of is CC Miller moving hives in horse drawn wagons. I am sure there are plenty of other examples.
