We follow (and post the fact that we follow) cleaning guidelines used by the
county Child Development office that monitors daycare centers. You probably
have such an agency nearby. Appearance can be misleading of course. It's the
germy child that played with the toy within the past few minutes that's
liable to spread disease, not the accumulated schmutz (technical term) of
years of joyful play. So really, unless you sanitize each toy after each
child, you're not going to be extremely effective in preventing disease.

I and others who work here at the Children's Science Explorium at
Sugar Sand Park in Boca Raton, Florida, (mostly for children ages 5-12)
have a general exhibit question: what are general, accepted procedures or
protocols for cleaning exhibits? Particularly, building blocks and complex
plastic components that many people handle every day, all week long? Also,
same for buttons, handles, wheels, etc. How often, what do you use or
recommend for cleansing agents, & what techniques? Primary concerns are
sanitation, cleanliness, and appearance. Mostly sanitation. How frequently
should the cleanings be done is a big unknown for us. Every day vs. once a
week?

Thanks, Ron Tompkins, Science Presenter, Sugar Sand Park.
