If anyone is curious why the aversion to human evolution persists in  
the United States, the answer is that the aversion is _taught_ to  
very young kids, in large scale.

If you haven't already listened to the children singing, "I'm no kin  
to a monkey", I strongly suggest you do:

The song could be a central feature in a great science exhibit, right  
next to an equivalent mocking of heliocentrism, perhaps.
