Susan, They do (or did) this in the Glasgow Science Centre. I believe
that the equipment was made by Dr. Ken Skeldon of the University of Glasgow.
The equipment is quite sophisticated - A tone is generated and played
through a loudspeaker near a wine glass. A laser beam bouncing off the
side of the glass generates a control signal to keep the tone tuned to
the glass. A strobe illuminates the glass, so that the vibrations can
be "seen." As the tone volume is turned up, the distortions become
stronger (They can be amazing - about a centimetre of distortion,
sometimes). Finally, the glass breaks. Try:
