I remember both cartoons.
The one from Mad Magazine is in a collection of Al Jaffee
cartoons. The cartoon is called Hex Marks the Spot. I Xeroxed and
pasted it into a poster for dorm room years ago.
I think I saw the pyramid cartoon or a similar one on the cover
of Archaeology Notes newsletter in the 1980s.

While you are at it, it might be fun to find the old 'Mad' magazine
marginal.
This marginal is one that shows the archaeologist putting in test pits
on
a grid system. The first pit comes up empty, but just misses the tip of
a
pyramid. The second pit comes up empty, but just misses a fantastic
King
Tut type burial with loads of goodies, I don't recollect what the
third
test pit missed, but you get the idea.
It would be a nice pairing perhaps.
