The historic context is important in determining the function of these  metal 
lids. I have seen similar box lids made from scrap brass or cuprous metal  in 
the debris of a Chinese fishing camp that dated between 1860 and 1873. The  
fisher folk were ingenious in salvaging scrap materials and re-using them for a 
 wide variety of purposes (spouts, waterproofing, box lids, etc.).
