Have you tried getting an agent? Difficult, but easier than contacting  
publishers yourself. A lot of publishers immediately file manuscripts not  
submitted by agents straight into the trash can. An agent will take care of  
contacting the trade publishers, etc. Getting an agent was the big step that my  spouse 
made in going from unpublished wannabe to multiple books published  author. 
Also, the original post to Histarch mentioned using Doug Scott's name.  That is 
a great reference for everyone on Histarch, but a trade publisher will  only 
ask how many copies of his books have been sold. Good luck.
