I think there are a number of interesting observations to be made.
I looked at the archives for July 97 and Paul Courtney and I are the only
one’s still posting in July 07. I am not sure what this says about Paul and
I but it suggests that there is a turnover of members. What would be the
life of a poster – 3 years???
There is also a seasonal variation in postings as people go on holiday
..etc.
I wonder how long people are active in discussion groups? The Web 2.0 thing
seems to be based on the premise that it is quick and easy to communicate,
but I notice that many blogs seem to run down as the blogger gets tired or
bored or feels that posting is an effort and I suspect the same is true with
discussion lists.
Do we need fresh blood to present new ideas/topics…etc? The debate about
historical archaeology and academia saw many of the same old ideas presented
(I own up!) as in a similar debate in 1999.
Should I sign off?
