The "scallop" bivalves around here exhibit deeply indented grooves or a
corrugated surface that I always associated with the term "scalloped."
Considering the arguments that scallopped might mean the effects of whipping, I can see
a physical connection. From a forensic view, could whip marks have created
grooves (after the swelling went down), rather than raised welts? All rather
grim, I understand. But the reverend (or witnesses) might have viewed the body
many hours after death.
