John apparently considers the cough an entirely voluntary activity which
can be postponed at will. I don't think so. Is there a physician on the
list who could resolve this question?
Marcie Ewasko, fellow list member and musican, mentioned that audience
coughing definitely breaks the concentration of performers. I take her
contention seriously but am surprised. Many individuals, when totally
focused on an activity, do not allow "anything" to get in the way - focus
is maintained. Conversely, I know people who whine extensively over a
little noise in the adjoining work station; these folks will whine about
everything, even a pay increase. I only whine in the house; my dog Katie
doesn't like it one bit.
Similar to John, I try to restrict my coughing at concerts to the loud
parts of a work. Sometimes I succeed, sometimes I don't. My attempts
are out of consideration for fellow audience members who paid good money,
certainly not out of consideration for the performers who are essentially
serving the audience during the performance. On with the show!
