The reference to Hoovervilles is a hurtful misnomer that needs correctiing.
Remember, after all, that many of the "New Deal" programs were proposed in
the late Hoover administration as emergency measures to alieviate the economic
situation of the nation. However, a hostile Congress made certain that they
were tabled until the new administration took office and could get full credit
for these great "innovations". As archaeologists, we are concerned with the
details of the past and their correct (as opposed to politically correct)
interpretation. Lets give Herbert H. a break! He was an honest guy who warned
folks repeatedly of fiscal irresponsiblity. His fault was in believing that
popular and voluntary good judgement would prevail.
