Water is the universal solvent. It is both an acid and a base
concurrently and will, although usually slowly, react with any material
that reacts with acids and/or bases. Some elements react with water
quite explosively, those generally found on the far left of the periodic
table, such as sodium. Sodium in fact is VERY explosive when joined with
water OR free oxygen.
