I believe that Bernstein is a better haydnian than mozartian. Let's say
Furtwangler, the young Karajan, Walter and Krips. I guess all of these can
reasonably be considered among those 'normally associated with big romantic
works'. But I could also add Brueggen (who regularly conducts Beethoven or
Mendelssohn).
Accompanying (piano) concertos, I'd also mention Barenboim (accompanying
himself!) and Szell (Vegh cannot compete, as, if I'm not wrong, he didn't
conduct the romantic repertoire).
