I am saddened to have to report that we have learned that on June 1, 2006
Edward McM. Larrabee died in Hurricane, Utah, his hometown since 1996. His
wife and fellow historical archaeologist, Susan Kardas, survives him.

Many of you knew Larrabee and his work and may want to put out some field
or personal accounts on HISTARCH. His BA was from Reed College (1955), MA
from the University of Washington (1958 American History) and PhD from
Columbia (1970 American History). He spent a decade practicing historical
archaeology under Louis Caywood, John Cotter and Paul Schumacher. In the
early 1960s he was Senior Archaeologist at the Fortress of Louisbourg
Restoration project in Nova Scotia. He also taught in the Anthropology
departments of Hunter College and John Jay College (CUNY) and was a
founding member of the Society for Historical Archaeology (1967).

From 1975 to the present, he was a Partner and Principal Investigator,
Archaeologist of Historic Sites Research in Princeton, New Jersey, and
since 1996 in Hurricane, Utah. Since 1966 he co-authored many site reports
with his wife and business associate, Susan Kardas, whom he met through Jim
Deetz.

The gamut of his interests included commercial, residential and industrial
sites from the 18th through 20th centuries. These studies concentrated on
rural settlement patterns, and development of historic landscapes, and
military sites; and in the West, fur trade sites, U.S. Army forts and
pioneer Mormon sites.

Notes of condolence may be sent to his wife at:

and donations in Edward's name can be sent to the Hurricane Animal Shelter
