The Self-Reliance Foundation has organized a preconference workshop for the
upcoming ASTC Conference in Philadelphia. The workshop will focus on
informal science education and Latinos. Specific presentations and small group
discussions will be held on involving Latino parents, current research on Latino
participation in science museums and other informal environments, and
collaboration with Latino-focused science programs in the U.S. and Latin America.
There are two open spacess in the workshop. (Maximum enrollment is 30). If

10 am - 10:30: Introductions, overview: “Latinos and Informal Science
Education”

An overview of current issues concerning Latinos and informal science
education.
10:30 - 12 Noon. Theme I: Involving Latino Families in Science Education
Presenter: Maite Arce, Senior Director of Policy and Programs, Acceso
Hispano
Breakout Group Leaders: Maite Arce & Malu Jimenez (Senior Programs
Director, Self-Reliance Foundation)
An overview of challenges and opportunities regarding the involvement of
Latino parents in education, followed by small group discussions centered on
identifying the key challenges and opportunities for science centers in engaging
the involvement of Latino families.
12 Noon-12:30. Lunch break (box lunches provided)
12:30-2 PM Theme II: Current Research on Latinos & Informal Science
Presenter: Cecilia Garibay, Garibay Group
Breakout Group Leaders: Cecilia Garibay & Maddie Zeigler (grant
development consultant & former senior education staff member at New Mexico Museum of
Natural History)
An overview of the cultural and methodological issues involved in conducting
research on informal science learning and Latinos, followed by small
discussions designed to identify key research questions that can contribute to
developing a research agenda on these issues.
2-3:30 PM: Theme III: Opportunities for Collaboration
Presenters: Alejandra León-Castellá, Executive Director, Red-POP (network
of science centers and science education programs in Latin America; Bob
Russell
An introduction to: (1) Red-POP and Latin American science centers and
their resources; and (2) several programs developed by U.S. science centers for
Latino families, followed by small group discussions on opportunities for
collaboration with these projects and organizations.
