Straw oboes were always popular when Pacific Science Center did lobby
activities before the Seattle Symphony youth concerts in the 1980s. Cut
one end of a plastic straw to a point and flatten it, blow into it
holding it loosely in your lips, eventually you get a squawking sound
kids love. Cut the straw to show how the pitch rises as the length of
the straw is made shorter.

Kids loved it but I'm not sure the musicians and conductor liked the
added squawking during the concert itself...

Does anyone have a demonstration, preferably hands-on, of how the voice
works appropriate for ages 3 - 10? We're partnering with our local
symphony
to do a hands-on activity before their next family day at the symphony.
We'll be set up in a noisy lobby. Thanks.
