Swivel guns need not have permanently affixed handles. Some had wooden
or iron handles that attached to the cascabel and could be removed if
the gun were to be transferred from the u-shaped bracket associated
with many swivel guns to a seacoast or field carriage, in which case
the handle could become a nuisance. Since both swivel mount and
carriage articulated at the trunnions, they were nicely
interchangeable.
Incidentally, Lewis & Clark took a swivel gun with them on their
journeys. They used it for defense, communication, and celebrating.
Any idea on the bore diameter, just out of curiosity? At 35 inches,
your gun is towards the upper end of the length spectrum for swivel
guns, though not unheard of.
