Ah, to carry a chalk board in my back pack again. The problem, Dan, is that
it is hard to clean off the chalk board out in the field and after a while the
old lettering blurs with the new. Moreover, all it takes is a little
carelessness or a turn of the board in the sunlight to blur or obscure any message
on the board. White letters on a black background will always be visible. Of
course, carrying a box of letters and the board may not be practical in
110-degree heat, especially when you just never can find the letter "S" and have
to sort through all the dang letters with sweat draining all over the place.
Perhaps a lens cap or a jackknife is better for field survey and the menu
board is better for test and major excavation work, eh?
