Statistical Research, Inc. (SRI), a multidisciplinary cultural resources consulting firm, has an immediate opening for a full-time manager of the archaeological laboratory in our Redlands, California, office. The person filling this position will work closely with SRI's laboratory director located in Tucson, AZ.
The laboratory manager (LM) will oversee all regular functions of an archaeological laboratory and supervise a staff of 2-10 technicians and volunteers. Responsibilities include caring for and tracking archaeological collections and associated field and laboratory data, assigning tasks and evaluating the work of laboratory technicians, assisting analysts and project staff with their collections needs, supporting the laboratory needs of SRI's other California offices, and working with the laboratory director to keep the permits and repository agreements for SRI's California offices current.
Tasks involve managing the artifact inventory, purchasing, preparing, and maintaining equipment for field and laboratory projects, managing and maintaining company facilities and vehicles, preparing samples for analysis, and preparing collections for delivery to curation facilities.
The LM must be able to identify new tasks as needed and assist staff members with their project needs and the needs of the company as a whole. From time to time, the LM may perform other tasks in the company for which he/she is qualified.
The LM must have a solid interest in the maintenance of archaeological collections and the ability to interact with and assist specialists in all areas of cultural resource management. The ability to bring in collections management work for the company is desirable.
The successful candidate will be a highly organized, detail-oriented individual with a minimum of a Master's degree in museum studies, anthropology, or archaeology and at least two years post-degree management experience in an archaeological or museum laboratory. Preference will be given to candidates with a proven record of laboratory and management experience. Applicants must be experienced with Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, and word-processing programs.
