also recommend
Merrifield, Ralph
1990 Archaeology of Ritual and Magic. New Amsterdam Books. ISBN:
0941533263
He notes in his introduction essentially that, now that he's at the end
of his career, he can publish this material, since it no longer matters
if people think he's off his nut. (I'm paraphrasing, obviously).
Ron, thanks for the reference, I will have to check that one out.

Megan et al,
Yes, I bought a copy of Merrifield and used it in my 2000
paper.Unfortunately, I never compiled my bibliography for that paper.
Here are some oth4er useful sources:
Ewans, George Ewart
1966 Patterns Under the Plough. (I don't have it handy, so the
publisher remains forgotten)
Ewans documented through oral interviews the use of witch bottles and
attributed burying objects in houses to the Roman practice of burying
family under the house in order to protect the living.
Swan, June
1996 Journal of the Costume Society (Shoe Museum, London, England.
Again, I do not have the complete references)
Swan created the Northampton Museum Index and keeps entries of worldwide
discoveries of shoes, boots, and other concealments. I highly recommend
to all members of HISTARCH who discover concealments to track her down
and include your find in this index. Swan also provided evidence for
"spirit middens" that were used for hundreds of years, but I no longer
recall the details.
I guess I should dredge out my file on all this stuff and take another
crack at it.
