Missouri Valley College is offering two archaeological field schools during the summer of 2006.  Students can obtain three credit hours for each session and there are no prerequisites.  Volunteers are also welcome on both projects.  



 



Session I: Arrow Rock, Missouri <http://www.arrowrock.org/>

Brief Description:  Arrow Rock, established in 1829 as a Missouri river port on the Santa Fe Trail and at the center of Missouri’s plantation district, is a National Landmark site and was recognized in 2006 by the National Trust of Historic Places as one of the “Dozen Distinctive Destinations <http://www.nationaltrust.org/dozen_distinctive_destinations/2006/arrowrock.html> ” in the United States. A 25-acre archaeological survey will be conducted on the private land within Arrow Rock to assist in future historic preservation efforts. 



 



 



Session II: Scott Joplin State Historic Site <http://www.mostateparks.com/scottjoplin.htm>  in St. Louis, Missouri

Brief Description: The Scott Joplin State Historic Site is operated by the Missouri State Parks to celebrate the life and music of Scott Joplin, the King of Ragtime, who lived at this St. Louis residence in the early 20th century. The goal of this archaeological project is to expand this historic site’s interpretation to include Joplin’s neighborhood history and to transform the site into a community cultural center.
