Why not? Maybe there is a Public Broadcasting System station that would
produce a balanced version of the story. Another approach would be to fund one of
the many comic-book companies (eg. Dark Horse or Image) to produce books with
the anti-looting ethic and pass them out to the Civil War re-enactor
organizations, history groups, and antique world. Back in 1982-1983, a group of
private, not-well-funded, California archaeologists pooled our funds to hire the
lobbyist firm of Ternes & Houston and continued raising funds to fly
archaeologists to testify before key legislative committees and it only cost us
about $10,000 out of our own pockets. With the consulting industry the way it is
today, I should think a great deal more funds could be found to hire an
advertising firm to mainstream a positive message that would influence Virginia
legislators to pass protective laws. Get creative, hold fund-raising dinners,
make a pitch at your state archaeology meetings, and knock on the doors of
major archaeology companies and you would be surprised at how much money could be
raised for such a good cause.
