Since this thread is still continuing, I'd like to say how pleased I am
with my recently acquired set of the performances by Annie Fischer. My
familiarity with this repertoire is not as great as some: the only other
complete cycles I own are those by Schnabel and Goode, and I have various
other performers doing individual sonatas, along with Kempff and Pollini
doing the late sonatas. So . . . I haven't heard everything, but I'm
familiar with what I think are some of the best. And Annie Fischer,
in comparison with this company, is tremendous. The playing seems very
well judged to me, although I don't want to suggest that it is lacking
in spontaneity. (Although, truth be told, her recording technique--the
repetition of bits till she was satisfied, sounds anything but
spontaneous.) The are profound, deeply satisfying performances, and if I
miss the glint of Beethoven's humor that Schnabel sometimes gives me, I
find that her thoughtfulness conveys what seems to me the Beethovenian
spirit perhaps more than any other recordings I know.
