I think abandoning field force is a worthwhile practice in the right
circumstances. I think what Dee is failing to recognize is that there are
trade-offs. Would abandoning field force worsen varroa problems? Maybe.
Maybe not. Maybe just marginally. With the right timing, would the
practice lead to more efficient use of honey stores? Quite posssibly,
yes. I think the black-and-white, one-or-the-other thinking is
misleading. I think beekeeping, like all biological systems, is better
understood as a balancing act.
