It sounds like a drone Carpenter Bee, the color is wrong. You may have a
different speices than I have here. If so, they are harmless. He is trying
to drive you from his mating area, but does not really have the means to do
it. Here is a stupid trick that will amaze the kids. Point a stick at it
and it will hover around the tip, move the stick and the bee will follow it.
Tell the kids you have a trained bee. Works every time.
