A couple of times (off a photograph of a map of the West Point Foundry
on the wall at the Foundry School Museum, and another off a map on the
wall, both behind glass, at the "College in the Forest" Drew
University, where former Governor Thomas Keane, the head of the 9/11
Commission, was also the president, and film director Woody Allen's
current wife attended school,) the photographs of the maps were
digitized for relative locations and compared to other ground features
on a large GTCO digitizng tablet that was also being used for
close-range photogrammetry, that involved tracing over 8x10 photo
after they were registered into the 3D space through computations and
reseau marks pointed at on the tablet, it was a "digital photography"
before digital photography. The documented camera from Rollei has
extreme data from it's manufacture that is also part of the accuracies
detected from the photos, so that each lens has a document that goes
with it and the camera body into the software. There are motors in the
lens. Irv Garrison of the NOAA did a study using it underwater in a
pool with a model ship to see if it would have utility in the
documentation of underwater erosional properties, a long term "time
lapse" perhaps in 3 dimensions. The other laser imaging systems have
gotten very good from the literature I've seen. The Swedish scientist
have worked on "gated lasers" which might have applications
underwater, I understand and will work in the dawn and twilight where
"night vision" (proposed for the US Mexican border by the Texas
governor I just read) doesn't work.
