Afternoon all,
Thanks so very much for your responses to my query. I'm getting some
interesting answers. I think I'll try to put together a spreadsheet or
listing and pass it on to the list as well as the summary of the
American Library Association discussion in January. Keep the comments
coming!

Thanks again,
Bonnie Ryan

Subject: Re: Return to "Old notes" - Library connections

In San Diego, where I might add, we have more than 16,000 archaeological

sites recorded from over 4,000 square miles of land, there are 2
repositories
for field reports and one for collections. The official NPS sanctioned
record
center is the South Coastal Information Center, San Diego State
University
(located in a building out in the city and off campus). Then there is
the San
Diego Museum of Man, which has its own parallel site record system and
duplicate
set of field reports. No place keeps the actual field notes, maps,
photos,
etc. However, the commercial San Diego Archaeological Center charges
$700 for
a Hollinger-size archival box and requires reports and probably would
take
field notes, photos, etc. If we send copies of all 3 places, there is a
chance
something will survive into the next century.

Oh, and must companies keep their own records, reports, collections etc.

because they are reluctant to part with them or do not have the $700 per
box to
curate them. Alas, some folks just dump the field note books etc. when
the
project has passed or their storage facility gets too dirty or full.
