there are some interesting bits & pieces strewn here & there in some of the
early 19th-century/victorian texts i've been wading thru which sort of
connect archaeology & ruins with the "momento mori" idea (Romanticism & all
that) & sometimes knowledge in general to being evil; there was even a sly
link between archaeology & necromancy, and interesting correlations between
William Smith's work mapping the strata of england with medieval concepts of
semiotix (mystic connections between signs and their meanings)...
i've also gained a certain affinity for the idea of orpheus going into the
underworld, searching for "lost time"
