Southwestern Regional Archaeologist for Louisiana
University of Louisiana at Lafayette
Position: Southwestern Regional Archaeologist, in a joint program of
the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and the Louisiana Division of
Archaeology
Duties: The Southwestern Regional Archaeologist conducts surveys, tests
sites to determine eligibility for the National Register of Historic
Places (NRHP), and nominates sites to the NRHP. The archaeologist in
this position plans fieldwork based on inquiries and requests from the
public, research interests and priorities, and management issues in the
region. An important part of the job is sharing information about
archaeology with the public and with governmental representatives.
Limited university teaching may be possible after the archaeologist is
well established. The highly visible statewide Regional Archaeology
Program has earned strong public support and professional respect. It
offers a great deal of autonomy and the opportunity to develop research
interests within the region. The position does not involve fieldwork
related to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
Qualifications: An M.A. in anthropology is required; a Ph.D. is strongly
preferred. Organization and completion of an archaeological field study
must be evidenced by a thesis, dissertation, or equivalent report.
Experience in both historical and prehistoric archaeology of the
Southeast is desirable. Also helpful is experience in organizing
independent research, public speaking, report writing, and budget
administration.
Application: Applications will be accepted until July 1, 2007; position
is available September 1, 2007. Send letter of interest, vita, and
names of three references to Dr. Chip McGimsey, State Archaeologist,
Division of Archaeology, P.O. Box 44247, Baton Rouge, LA 70804
(225-342-8170; [log in to unmask]).
