The position for archeological supervisor has opened at the Texas
Department of Transportation in Austin, Texas. The person hired will
supervise a staff of 13 archeologists managing 25 districts throughout
the state. Historical archeological investigations occupy a large

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
 
Supervises a group of professional and technical employees engaged in
conducting environmental studies for clearance of transportation
projects in the Environmental Affairs Division. Work requires contact
with governmental regulatory agencies and private entities. Employees at
this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct
accountability for the work product.
 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
 
Education and Experience
 
Master's degree in archeology, anthropology or geology plus three (3)
years progressively responsible experience in archeology. Related
doctoral level education may be substituted for experience on a year per
year basis. Must meet Secretary of the Interior's Code of Federal
Regulations, 36 CFR Part 61 requirements. Must have three (3) years
managerial/supervisory experience. (Project leader and/or lead worker
experience will substitute for managerial/supervisory experience.)
(Experience requirements may be satisfied by full-time experience or the
prorated part-time equivalent.)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
 
Directs the design, coordination and monitoring of complex
environmental programs, issues and mitigation with Department staff,
state and federal regulatory agencies and contracted professionals.
Oversees the review, analysis and coordination of environmental
documentation and ensures compliance with applicable state and federal
environmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Oversees and evaluates environmental impact of transportation
activities in the area of cultural resources.
Plans, develops, recommends and implements environmental policies,
procedures and guidelines.
Oversees the effectiveness of projects/programs.
Prepares, reviews and approves complex and sensitive correspondence,
documents, reports, environmental assessments, impact statements and
programmatic assessments.
Develops and monitors the unit budget.
Provides high-level expertise in the area of environmental studies and
makes recommendations concerning environmental issues for transportation
projects.
Meets with regulatory agencies to resolve issues.
Visits districts, divisions and offices to consult with staff; drives
and travels by other modes to perform these duties.
Participates in strategic planning and scheduling; makes
recommendations concerning transportation and environmental projects and
programs.
Keeps abreast of federal and state environmental laws, regulations
policies and procedures.
Negotiates and monitors the execution of environmental contracts.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
 
Driver's record check will be conducted by the Department. Satisfactory
driving records are required for driving state or personal vehicles and
motor driven equipment to conduct agency business.

test prior to employment and will be subject to reasonable cause testing
during employment.
 
Successful completion of a post-offer/pre-employment physical exam at
