Of course, there is the legend or myth that trade ships replaced ballast  
stones with Chinese Trade Porcelains in the Philippines to trade along the  
Pacific Coast. I imagine an enterprising sailor could have swapped ballast  stones 
for trade porcelain when he went ashore on liberty and made enough coin  to 
have a pretty fun shoreleave.
