in NYC.   New Visions is a 501c3 that works with the school system in 
NY providing technical assistance in a range of areas.  This position 
focuses on working in partnership with the natural history museum to 
work with NYC teachers.

Title/Position:		Program Officer, Science Content Networks

Position Summary:
The Science Content Program Officer will work with practitioners to 
improve science education by deepening their understandings of 
inquiry approaches to science teaching and learning.  Working in 
collaboration with staff from the American Museum of Natural History 
(AMNH), the Program Officer will provide a program of structured, 
experiential learning opportunities which strengthen practitioners' 
knowledge of content, best teaching practices, and leadership 
capacity.  The Program Officer will play a key role in a long-term 
partnership with the American Museum of Natural History, developing 
and delivering innovative professional development infused with 
museum resources.

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

*	Co-facilitate partnership with American Museum of Natural 
History to design and deliver professional development which deepens 
capacity in inquiry approaches to teaching and integrates museum 
resources with classroom instruction.  This work may include monthly 
sessions, two-day institutes, and other formats.

*	Participate in school site visits to work with individual 
teachers (or small groups) to advise and improve their effective 
teaching practices; share information and insights with New Visions 
and DOE staff.

*	Undertake research on the effectiveness and impacts of the 
professional development program on science teaching and student 
learning by working closely with an outside evaluation firm, building 
practitioner capacity to plan and undertake action research, and by 
developing and implementing a research plan for various components of 
the PD program.

*	Develop, facilitate, and use New Visions Knowledge Base, an 
open source platform on the world-wide web, to build and sustain 
learning communities by sharing promising practices and knowledge.

Education and Experience:

*	Masters-level degree in a science or science teaching;
*	Minimum of 3-5 years of teaching science at the secondary school level.

Required Skill Sets and Experiences:

*	Extensive experience in teaching science through inquiry and 
experiential learning.
*	Expert knowledge of science:  biology, ecology and 
environmental, chemistry, physics, or related sciences relevant to 
secondary school settings.
*	Experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating 
professional development programs for science teaching.
*	Skills related to the design, implementation, and assessment 
of effective science curricula.
*	Experience with standards-based education reform in urban 
settings is essential.
*	Planning and conducting research on teaching and learning 
including building and implementing a research design, data 
gathering, and analysis.
*	Demonstrated experience in working collaboratively and in 
partnership with outside organizations, including museums and /or 
informal science learning institutions.
*      Excellent writing, organizational, and inter-personal skills 
including facilitation
