Hello, Reagan:

The first time I tried Second Life, about 5 years ago, my avatar (the
word for "character") got stuck at the bottom of a body of water and
I just left him there. I assume he's still there and extremely
bored. You have done everything correctly except you probably don't
have a fast enough connection to the internet or a fast enough
computer, or both. It takes a lot of time for your 3D world to
render so that it doesn't look bleak. Or maybe you landed on bleak
island (or are in bleak house? sorry...). Anyway, try finding a
faster connection/computer and you will be surprised how much more
immersive it becomes. I went from a g4 powerbook to one of the new
dual core intel macbook pro and it made a world of difference, so to
speak.
