Call for papers: “Bridging Landscapes”, SHA, 2011
Dear All,
We are organizing an inter-disciplinary session entitled “Bridging
Landscapes: Geographic Approaches to the Archaeologies of Landscape” for the
2011 Society for Historical Archaeology meeting in Austin, Texas. The
session seeks presenters who are using current geographic theory or methods
for the interpretation of archaeological landscapes. The following is a
working abstract for the session:
The term “landscape” has been used to define, frame, and drive certain
historical archaeologies over the last twenty years. The definition and
application of the landscape concept by archaeologists has gradually drifted
away from geography, the discipline that introduced landscape studies in the
early 20th century. Both cultural geographers and archaeologists are
concerned with the relationships between space and place attempting to
understand the complex links between people and the varied landscapes that
surround them. The conceptual divide between the two disciplines has
resulted in a landscape archaeology tradition that maintains a literature
largely isolated from the vibrant landscape research in geography. This
session seeks to bridge the two traditions of landscape investigation. The
interdisciplinary papers presented here attempt to strengthen, challenge and
theoretically rejuvenate landscape archaeology by drawing on current
landscape theory and interpretive models from geography.
The session will conclude with noted landscape geographer Amy Mills acting
as the discussant.
If this proposed session interests you, please send us an abstract
by June 18 2010, or email prior to that date with ideas or questions.
Thank you!
