HISTARCH and other archaeological listservs combine scholarly discourse with idle chit-chat. There's nothing wrong with that (indeed, that's the nature of our listservs), but I think it's appropriate to confine the chit-chat to our free time after working hours. Otherwise, the company has to pay for it (if you're employed by a CRM firm) or the taxpayers have to pay for it (if you're a federal employee).
Just my 2 cents' worth.

I have enjoyed sharing thoughts with people all over the world from my
home/office, so hope you are not correct. I expect some employers have clamped
down on the time people spend on these exchanges from the office. Some
archaeologists want others to pay for their time online.
