The V and As book, Chinese Export art and Design ed C. Clunas 1987 pl 97 
shows a painting of a tea packing warehouse  of c.1800. Barefoot Chinese 
are shown compacting the their feet in lead-foil lined wooden cases. 
Possibly the  same illustration as fig 9 in the Choi paper.
