slashdot might be of interest. Scientists used powerful x-rays to create 3-D
images of insects in opaque amber, then generated enlarged models with a 3D
"printer" I'm not sure how big you could print, but you might be able to
use 3D files for a different rapid prototyping approach, like carving pieces
out of foam and then gluing them together. Of course, the cost might be
prohibitive, but enough vo-tech schools have rapid prototype machines that
you might find one that wanted to do it as a project in collaboration with
you.
