In the case of Pittsburgh's original Buhl Planetarium
and Institute of Popular Science [1939-1991], our one
million-volt Oudin-type Telsa Coil

is so large that we used the building's PA system to
explain the instrument and demonstration, just prior
to a Tesla Coil demonstration [adding that Nikola
Telsa, who perfected the AC electrical transmission
system, worked in Pittsburgh for George Westinghouse
for about a year].
For Van de Graaff demonstrations,

the Floor Aide would simply talk loud enough to be
heard while the instrument was in use. However, for
much of the time that the Floor Aide was talking, the
machine was off. Of course this worked better in floor
demonstrations, when people could encircle the
machine, and hence be closer to the speaker, than in
demonstrations in our Little Science Theater. However,
when we did a theater demonstration, the theater had
its own PA system, which was sometimes used.
