in horror movies in the 1930s.

That's what makes it a work of genius. It is beautiful and a balm for
the spirit even for those of us who cannot fully appreciate it. And
indeed who can fully appreciate the greatest masterpieces? They are
proof that words like 'genius' and 'masterpiece' can easily be used too
freely.
