You also describe droplets of water forming on the acrylic ‘around the
cluster‘, but ‘not directly above it’. The rising moist air is not
condensing on the acrylic until it reaches the part of the acrylic that is
cooler located outside the cluster.
In my observations of production colonies that had roofs with smooth
surface facing inward, I was quite surprised how big of an affect surface
properties had on the formation of condensation. I found that the smooth
surface caused about a cup of water to acuminate on the top of the inner
cover each night, and the rough surface lids had minimal condensation.
Perhaps wintering some with acrylic inner covers and some without will
tell.
