Sorry, this mom will very likely need to supplement until baby gains
enough to have the strength to breastfeed well and she rebuilds her milk
supply. Being this far below birth weight at a month of age is a very
serious thing for a baby. Donor milk from human milk banks is available
if the mother does not want to use non-human milks.
This mom and baby need a careful assessment of breastfeeding, baby's
condition and mom's risk factors for reduced production. Every 3 hour
breastfeeding is often insufficient for human babies the first few weeks
of life. Near term babies generally have lower energy and alertness and
are poorer feeders, and may need special monitoring and support.
Please, please refer this mom to an IBCLC for immediate help. This is
beyond the scope of a peer counselor. The LC will probably welcome you
to come along and observe.
