Greetings fellow Histarchers,

A VERY belated thank you to all of you who responded to my request for
identification assistance with six objects from a privy shaft at the
Bedford Street site in New York City c.1850-1860 (the pictures are
still posted on www.archaeoseek.ning.com).

I have been able to positively identify the Dragon/Frog pipe with the
assistance of Mr. Don Duco from the Pijpenkabinet (Pipe) Museum in
Amsterdam which has proved to be a tremendous resource for the
identification of European pipes. I would recommend a visit:
www.pijpenkabinet.nl

The dragon/frog pipe is a cigar holder that was produced by Dumeril of
Saint-Omer in the North of France. Production of the pipe began c. 1845
and continued until about 1880. The mold was then sold to the Gouda,
Holland, firm of Goedewaagen, where the pipe was produced till about
the year 1900. Both the mold and the original pipe are in the
Pijpenkabinet collection. Quite extraordinary!

Thanks again to all of you who responded to my initial inquiry.

Jessica
